On Tuesday, Governor Henry McMaster announced South Carolina is joining a new national effort to strengthen foster care services across the state. The initiative—called “A Home for Every Child”—was unveiled at the Statehouse in partnership with the U.S. Administration for Children and Families and the Department of Health and Human Services.

State leaders say the goal is to increase the number of licensed foster homes, reduce unnecessary entries into foster care, and better support families and caregivers. Officials note a nationwide shortage—just 57 foster homes for every 100 children entering care.

Governor McMaster called foster parents essential, especially during Foster Care Awareness Month, saying the initiative offers “stability, hope, and belonging” for children in need. South Carolina DSS Director Tony Catone says the state still needs more foster families—particularly for teenagers, sibling groups, and children with complex needs.
