South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond says new changes to the state’s Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act will better protect donors while easing filing requirements for nonprofits. The amendments, included in Senate Bill 715 and recently signed into law by Governor Henry McMaster, now require charities and fundraisers to clearly disclose the legal name and purpose of the organization receiving donations at the start of any solicitation. Hammond says the law increases transparency and prevents vague fundraising appeals. The changes also reduce filing requirements for smaller fundraising campaigns and raise exemption thresholds for charities. Donors with questions or concerns can contact the South Carolina Secretary of State’s Division of Public Charities.
