Kershaw County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a variety of calls during the week ending August 2, with felony firearm arrests, financial crimes, assault investigations and property crimes among the most notable incidents.
Deputies made two significant firearm arrests during separate traffic stops. In one case, an Elgin traffic stop resulted in the discovery of a loaded shotgun, drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine, leading to multiple felony charges. In another, deputies recovered a stolen handgun from a convicted violent felon during a Lugoff traffic stop, resulting in additional firearms charges.
Financial crimes also kept investigators busy. Deputies documented a reported $39,000 sweepstakes scam involving a Lugoff resident, along with cases involving forged checks, unauthorized bank transactions and suspected identity theft.
Several assault investigations were opened during the week, including a reported robbery and assault in Kershaw, an assault in Camden that left a victim with serious injuries, and other incidents that remain under investigation.
Other notable incidents included a DUI arrest, vandalism to a vehicle, a stolen bicycle, recovery of a stolen vehicle reported out of Lexington County, recovery of three Kershaw County School District laptops, threatening phone call reports, harassment complaints, and multiple warrant services. Deputies also responded to several calls involving individuals in need of medical or crisis assistance and worked with partner agencies to ensure those individuals received appropriate care.
