According to the Camden PD, on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024, around 4:00 AM, the Camden Police Department (CPD) responded to an alarm call at the BP gas station located at 715 Jefferson Davis Hwy. Upon arrival, officers found the glass in the front door broken and open. A hand truck and a safe from inside the store were also found in the parking lot.
CPD Investigators were able to retrieve video surveillance footage from inside the store that showed a black male subject, wearing a black hoodie, grey shorts, and black shoes, using a cement block to break the glass front door and force entry into the gas station. While inside, the subject attempted to break into the ATM but was unsuccessful. He then brought a blue hand truck from his vehicle and used it to remove a safe from the business, attempting to load it into his vehicle but was unsuccessful. The subject then fled the scene in a white 4-door Honda Accord, leaving the safe and the blue hand truck in the parking lot.
Several hours later, while on patrol, a Camden Police Officer attempted to stop a white 4-door Honda Accord for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle stopped but fled the scene of the traffic stop on foot. CPD officers then set up a perimeter and requested assistance from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) K-9 Tracking Team. KCSO K-9 Mazie was deployed and tracked the suspect to an empty house on Sarsfield Ave, where he was apprehended without incident. The suspect was identified as Jermaine Perry Williams. Williams was transported to the Camden Police Department, where he later confessed to committing the burglary at the BP gas station. Williams was charged with Grand Larceny and Burglary 2nd degree. CPD Chief Jack Rushing said, “I would like to thank the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and KCSO K-9 Mazie for their help in quickly and safely apprehending the suspect. This is a great example of law enforcement in Kershaw County working together to get criminals off our streets.”
