Kershaw County Sheriff’s deputies responded to several major incidents during the past week, including an armed standoff, vehicle thefts, identity fraud, and financial crimes.
One of the week’s most significant calls involved an armed, emotionally distressed man who pointed a handgun during a standoff with deputies. After negotiations failed and the suspect moved toward a residence while armed, deputies deployed beanbag rounds, taking him into custody so he could receive medical treatment.
Deputies are also investigating the theft of a black 2017 Dodge Charger valued at approximately $55,000 after it disappeared from a Kershaw County residence while the owner was out of town. Investigators also responded to a vehicle break-in where a suspect pried open a car door, along with reports of mail theft and a mailbox destroyed by fireworks.
Financial crimes kept investigators busy as well. One case involves a woman allegedly using another person’s identity during multiple traffic stops, leaving the victim with a suspended driver’s license. Detectives are also investigating identity theft involving fraudulent student loan applications, a restaurant employee accused of diverting nearly $4,000 in credit card tips, and a scam that cost a victim more than $7,000 through fraudulent bank transfers.
Other notable incidents included the successful drone-assisted location of an 88-year-old woman with dementia who had wandered from her home, a burglary investigation, several warrant arrests, and multiple shoplifting and theft investigations across the county.
