Governor Henry McMaster says South Carolina will end the practice of using Social Security survivor benefits belonging to children in foster care to help pay for their care.
Under the change, those benefits will instead be preserved for the children they were intended to support. The South Carolina Department of Social Services plans to request $1.6 million in the upcoming state budget to replace benefits currently used to offset foster care costs for 301 children.
McMaster says the change will give children additional resources to help them build a more stable future.
