A small earthquake was recorded Tuesday morning January 20th just east of Elgin. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck about five kilometers east of Elgin at 6:33 a.m. Eastern Time. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately four kilometers and was widely felt across parts of Kershaw County, with residents reporting light shaking. No injuries or damage have been reported at this time. The USGS says earthquakes of this size are common in South Carolina and rarely cause damage.
