The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to a variety of thefts, assaults, fraud complaints and other criminal incidents during the week ending September 6.
Among the more serious cases, deputies investigated a reported kidnapping on September 1. According to the report, a driver allegedly took a seven-year-old child without the mother’s permission after being called to provide roadside assistance. Deputies said the mother attempted to retrieve the child and was allegedly pulled away from the vehicle. The driver was arrested and charged with kidnapping and third-degree assault and battery.
In Elgin, investigators received a report of a second-degree burglary on Fort Jackson Road. The victim reported that someone entered a residence through a window after pushing in a window air-conditioning unit and stole a container filled with quarters. Deputies were told that security cameras captured video from inside the home.
Deputies also investigated several other thefts. A bathtub was reported stolen from a property on Winding Pine Court in Elgin, while a Cassatt resident reported a Social Security check worth approximately $964 stolen. A roadside market operator also reported about $34 worth of merchandise taken during two separate incidents.
A firearm was reported missing from a vehicle on Barlow Drive in the Lugoff area. The owner told deputies the gun had been placed inside the vehicle the previous evening and was discovered missing after the vehicle appeared to have been entered. The case was forwarded for investigation.
Fraud was another recurring issue during the week. On September 2, a Lugoff resident reported receiving notice of nearly $18,000 allegedly owed on a Georgia property lease she said she never entered into. Another resident reported an unauthorized cellphone account, while an earlier Lugoff case involved a reported $1,263 loan allegedly opened using someone else’s identity.
Deputies also made DUI arrests during the reporting period. In one August 30 case in the Bethune area, deputies stopped a vehicle after receiving reports of a suspected impaired driver. The report states the driver’s breath sample registered a .23 percent blood-alcohol concentration. Another DUI charge was filed following a September 1 traffic stop on Sumter Highway after a deputy reported seeing a vehicle nearly strike another car.
The Sheriff’s Office also investigated shoplifting, vehicle break-ins, property damage and other assault and larceny complaints during the week.
