The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to a range of criminal incidents during the latest weekly reporting period, including burglary, drug offenses, thefts, fraud and weapons-related calls across the county.
One of the more serious incidents occurred August 24 on Branhamwood Road in Lugoff. Deputies arrested a person on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and battery and malicious injury to personal property. According to the report, the suspect allegedly attempted to reenter a residence after being told to leave and repeatedly threatened to shoot and kill the victim. Drug enforcement activity was also reported during the week. On August 26, a traffic stop on Longtown Road in Lugoff resulted in charges of first-offense distribution of methamphetamine and possession of another controlled substance. Deputies reported recovering approximately 2.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine, which field-tested positive. The Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team also executed narcotics search warrants during the week, including operations in the Kershaw and Cassatt areas. The Cassatt warrant was served August 28, with the residence secured and turned over to the Narcotics Unit for further investigation.
Several theft and burglary cases remain under investigation. On August 27, deputies responded to a Bethune Road residence in Bethune after an alarm. Deputies found a back door had apparently been kicked in and the door frame damaged. The residence was unoccupied, and it was not immediately known whether anything had been stolen. That same day, deputies investigated a grand larceny complaint on Robinson Town Road in Cassatt. The property owner reported several items missing, including three toolboxes containing tools and two air-conditioning units. An attempted break-in was also reported on Wateree Boulevard in the Camden area after a resident returned home to find damage around the front door.
On August 28, investigators were called to a reported second-degree burglary and petit larceny on Fort Jackson Road in Elgin. The case was forwarded to investigators. Other theft reports included a dirt bike and bike stand reported stolen from an open garage on Medfield Road in Lugoff. Deputies also investigated the theft of a Cane Corso puppy in the Cassatt area after surveillance video reportedly showed three people getting out of a vehicle, calling the dog toward the road and driving away with it.
Fraud-related reports included a financial identity fraud case in Elgin involving a loan the victim said he did not apply for. Deputies also investigated unauthorized debit-card transactions and another reported scam involving someone posing as connected to a home that was listed for sale.
The weekly report also included DUI and traffic-related arrests, vandalism complaints, warrant service and other calls for service.
