A Williston man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison for illegally possessing firearms following an incident in Kershaw County.

Federal prosecutors say 52-year-old Demetrius McIlwain fled deputies who were investigating a domestic violence complaint after telling officers there was a shotgun in his vehicle. After crashing his truck and running from the scene, deputies recovered three firearms and a small amount of fentanyl. McIlwain, who was legally prohibited from possessing guns because of multiple prior felony convictions, later admitted he was the driver. U.S. District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis sentenced him to 135 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
