A Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office deputy is recovering after his patrol vehicle was struck from behind Monday night on Highway 521 near Rembert.
KCSO says Master Deputy Tashawn Moore had completed a traffic stop and was finishing paperwork inside his stationary marked patrol vehicle with its blue lights activated when another driver struck the vehicle from behind. Moore and the other driver were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and both are expected to make a full recovery.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. Authorities say 34-year-old Shakyla Kieyonda Washington of Sumter has been charged with DUI, driving under suspension, and endangering emergency service personnel. She is being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Sheriff Lee Boan called the crash a reminder of the dangers deputies face while serving the community.
