Kershaw County Council honored former Sheriff Stephen “Steve” McCaskill for more than 36 years of service to the citizens of Kershaw County.
McCaskill began his law enforcement career in 1975 under the late Sheriff Hector Debhrul. He worked his way through the ranks, serving as a deputy, shift supervisor, narcotics supervisor and chief deputy before becoming sheriff. McCaskill served as Kershaw County Sheriff for 16 years, from January 1995 until his retirement in January 2011. During his tenure, McCaskill completed the FBI Academy in 1996, earned his bachelor’s degree in 2006, handled a number of major cases and oversaw the construction and design of the current Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office in Lugoff.
Kershaw County Council issued the proclamation August 11th, recognizing McCaskill for his dedicated service, leadership and lasting legacy of public safety and community care.
