Effective immediately, Kershaw County Humane Society will implement a managed intake process through July 15, 2025 due to the extreme rise in animal intake numbers. Managed intake means animals will only be accepted by appointment, based on the shelter’s current capacity and available resources. This policy is essential to protect staff, preserve resources, and, most importantly, ensure the best possible outcomes for the animals in our care.
All owners wishing to surrender a pet must complete an Owner Surrender Form, providing all relevant information about the animal. A KCHS staff member will review the form, explain the Managed Intake process, and discuss alternative options to surrender. Once the form is complete, an appointment will be scheduled no sooner than three weeks from the initial screening. No same-day owner surrenders will be accepted.
If you find a healthy, friendly stray animal, you are expected to make every reasonable effort to locate its owner. If you can, please safely hold the animal while you search for the owner. You must also text the shelter at 803-272-8410 to submit a found report. If an owner cannot be located, we will intake the animal by appointment. If you find an aggressive or injured animal in distress, contact Kershaw County Code Enforcement immediately at 803-425-6017. As a reminder, the Humane Society does not accept feral cats. Please text KCHS for information on alternative resources.
