October is Fire Prevention Month, and the City of Camden Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) for more than 100 years, to promote this year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Fire Prevention Week runs October 5–11, 2025, but the Camden Fire Department will be sharing fire safety information and resources throughout the entire month.

From smartphones and tablets to power tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, and toys, most electronics we use every day are powered by lithium-ion batteries. While convenient and powerful, these batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode if not used correctly or if damaged. “Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in our homes and workplaces. Knowing how to use and charge them properly is a simple but critical step in preventing fires,” said Camden Fire Chief, Eddie Gardner. “This year’s campaign helps us remind residents that safety starts with awareness.”

The Camden Fire Department encourages everyone to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach:

Buy only listed products:

  • When purchasing products with lithium-ion batteries, look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab.
  • Avoid buying batteries or devices that may not meet safety standards.

Charge devices safely:

  • Use only the cords and chargers that came with the device.
  • Buy replacement chargers only from the manufacturer or approved sources.
  • Charge devices on a hard surface, not on beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Unplug devices once fully charged—do not overcharge.

Recycle batteries responsibly:

  • Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or recycling bin.
  • Recycle at a certified battery collection site. Visit call2recycle.org to find a location nearby.

Throughout the month of October, Camden firefighters will be out and about in the community sharing tips, resources, and demonstrations. Be sure to check the City of Camden’s Facebook page for all the details and schedules of where they will be!
