The City of Camden, in partnership with AT&T, is pleased to announce the commencement of the underground infrastructure/installation project. This initiative will complete the transition of power lines underground and remove remaining aerial facilities, eliminating visual clutter and significantly enhancing Camden’s aesthetic appeal. AT&T has committed to an 18-month completion timeframe for this final phase.
The project represents the completion of one of Mayor Sheheen’s key campaign promises and fulfills a long-standing desire of the City Council to see utility lines buried underground. While the entire project is estimated to take 18 months to complete, physical work will begin within three months.
“We are excited to finally see these hundreds of power poles come down after waiting many years for this phase of the project to be completed,” Mayor Vincent Sheheen emphasized. “Camden is a beautiful city, and our roadways should show us at our best. We thank AT&T for moving forward on this critical project.”
AT&T will lead the effort to install new underground infrastructure and systematically remove existing aerial facilities. The comprehensive project will transform Camden’s streetscape by eliminating overhead power lines and utility equipment that currently impacts the city’s visual landscape.
This initiative not only provides for a more pleasing aesthetic aerial canopy but also provides much-needed protection against severe weather conditions common in the Carolinas. Underground utilities are significantly less vulnerable to damage from storms, high winds, and ice, resulting in improved service reliability for residents and businesses.

Upon completion of the underground infrastructure installation, fiber optic services will be available as an option for Camden residents and businesses, providing enhanced telecommunications capabilities and high-speed internet access throughout the city.
