The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to a variety of incidents during the week of October 11 through October 16, including thefts, assaults, drug offenses, financial fraud and arrests involving outstanding warrants.

Among the more notable incidents was a reported strong-arm robbery in Lugoff, where a victim told deputies that an acquaintance forcibly took an envelope containing $1,920 in cash before fleeing. Deputies searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the suspect. In a separate incident, a patron at a Lugoff restaurant was arrested after allegedly stealing $279 from tip jars. The money was recovered.

Deputies also investigated an assault at a Lugoff restaurant involving three individuals who allegedly attacked a man, damaged property and fled in an SUV. Another investigation involved an altercation near the Lugoff-Elgin Middle School bus lot, where scissors were reportedly used during an assault. In Elgin, a motorcycle rider was allegedly knocked from his bike during a confrontation, resulting in an arrest.

Property crimes were also reported throughout the county. In Camden, two handguns were stolen from unlocked vehicles, while an automotive business on Jefferson Davis Highway reported the theft of a generator, extension cord and exhaust system containing a catalytic converter. The stolen property was valued at approximately $4,880. Other reports involved a stolen vehicle, missing license plate, property damage and additional thefts.

Drug enforcement activity resulted in multiple arrests. During a traffic stop on Springvale Road in Lugoff, deputies discovered suspected methamphetamine, Schedule II controlled substances and marijuana, leading to the arrests of two individuals. A separate traffic stop on West DeKalb Street in Camden resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine pills and a firearm, with the driver arrested on a possession with intent to distribute charge.

Financial crimes remained a concern during the reporting period. Deputies investigated fraudulent checks totaling $5,100, unauthorized bank account activity and an online purchase made without the account holder’s permission. Another resident reported receiving a telephone call from someone impersonating a law enforcement officer and attempting to obtain personal and banking information. No money was reported lost in that incident.

Other cases included a reported shooting in Lugoff in which the victim provided limited information to investigators, a stalking investigation involving a tracking device discovered beneath a vehicle in Elgin, and an incident in Camden where a woman allegedly swung a baseball bat at another individual before resisting arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office also assisted the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in arresting an individual wanted in Lexington County on a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Additional arrests involved outstanding warrants from other jurisdictions and Family Court.

Several cases have been forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division for further review, while others resulted in arrests or remain under investigation.
