Vehicle Thefts Reported in Lugoff and Elgin
Deputies investigated multiple reports of stolen vehicles on September 21.
On Wildwood Lane in Lugoff, a resident reported that a blue 2020 Dodge Charger 392 with a black hood had been stolen early that morning. According to the report, the vehicle’s tracking device was discovered in the yard, and the home’s security cameras had been turned off.
In Elgin, a truck driver reported that a white 2023 Freightliner Cascadia had been stolen from Love’s Travel Center on White Pond Road. The driver had parked the truck on September 18 and discovered it missing when he returned on September 21. Its trailer remained at the location.
Another truck driver reported a stolen 2019 Freightliner valued at approximately $35,000 after parking overnight at the Pilot Truck Stop on Highway 601 South in Lugoff. The driver also reported that his passport was missing.
The cases were referred for investigation or remained under investigation.
Theft of Mail and Air Conditioning Unit
On September 22, deputies received a report of stolen mail from a residence on Sparrow Lane in Lugoff. The complainant reported that seven expected pieces of mail were missing, including two gift cards valued at $225 combined, a bank statement and other correspondence.
That same day, deputies investigated the theft of an air conditioning unit from a rental property on East Ridge Road in Lugoff. Workers preparing the property for a new tenant discovered the unit missing and its connecting wires cut.
Both cases were forwarded to investigators.
Fraud and Financial Crimes
Deputies documented several financial complaints, including a reported rental scam involving an Elgin resident.
The complainant reported losing $1,346 after attempting to transfer a student housing lease through an arrangement made on Facebook Marketplace. Payments were sent through Cash App and Google Pay, but the intended recipient reportedly never completed the agreement.
In a separate incident, a Lugoff resident reported sending between $2,000 and $4,000 in money, gift cards and packages to someone with whom he had developed an online relationship. The report was classified as unfounded.
The Sheriff’s Office also documented a fraudulent-check case involving a $16,460 check that had been returned for insufficient funds. According to the report, the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office requested a warrant after payment arrangements were allegedly not fulfilled.
Residential Burglary Reported in Elgin
Deputies responded to a residential burglary alarm on Swinton Court in Elgin on September 22. A neighbor reported shattered glass in the home’s rear door.
Kershaw County deputies and Elgin Police Department officers responded to the scene. The Sheriff’s Office classified the incident as second-degree burglary and malicious injury to property, with charges filed.
Drug Possession Investigation Following Traffic Stop
A September 22 traffic stop on Red Hill Road in Camden led deputies to discover a pill that subsequently tested positive for MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.
According to the report, the deputy initially stopped the vehicle for speeding and detected the odor of marijuana. A search uncovered the suspected drug.
The driver was initially released with a speeding warning while the substance was retained for testing. Following a positive field test, the deputy reported plans to seek an arrest warrant for possession of MDMA.
Shoplifting Arrest at Lugoff Dollar General
A woman was arrested September 22 following a reported shoplifting incident at Dollar General on Roseborough Road in Lugoff.
Deputies reported recovering 16 items valued at $55.40 from the woman’s purse. The merchandise included personal care products, household supplies and other items.
The woman was transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center and also received a trespass notice prohibiting her from returning to the store.
Additional Property Crimes
Other incidents documented in the report included:
- A theft of approximately $50 worth of tools from a truck on Cassatt Road.
- A reported vehicle break-in on Dr. Humphries Road in Camden, where a vehicle’s radio screen was damaged.
- A report of stolen Apple AirPods at Lugoff-Elgin High School.
- A reported theft involving a vehicle allegedly taken without permission in the Lugoff area.
Several of these incidents were forwarded for further investigation.
