The South Carolina Gamecocks improved to 2-0 Saturday night, pulling away from Towson for a 45-9 victory at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks used a dominant rushing attack and a record-setting performance on special teams to put the Tigers away.
The star of the night was Vicari Swain, who returned two punts for touchdowns. Swain opened the scoring with a 58-yard punt return in the first quarter and struck again with a 45-yard return late in the third. The two touchdowns gave Swain five career punt-return scores, breaking South Carolina’s school record previously held by Dickie Harris.
South Carolina led 17-3 at halftime after Matt Fuller broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers added another big play early in the third quarter, racing 58 yards for a touchdown to extend the Gamecock advantage to 24-3. Shortly afterward, lightning and heavy rain forced a 74-minute weather delay.
Towson responded after the delay when quarterback Andrew Indorf connected with Aaron Enterline on a 23-yard touchdown pass, cutting the South Carolina lead to 24-9. But that was as close as the Tigers would get. Swain’s second punt-return touchdown made it 31-9 before Jabree Coleman and Isaiah Augustave added fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns.
The Gamecocks were dominant on the ground, rushing for 405 yards and averaging nearly 10 yards per carry. Fuller led South Carolina with 125 rushing yards, while Sellers finished with 119 yards rushing. The Gamecock defense held Towson to just 21 rushing yards and 203 total yards.
South Carolina moves to 2-0 after opening the season with a 57-0 victory over Kent State. The Gamecocks will now turn their attention toward the tougher portion of their schedule after taking care of business in their first two games at Williams-Brice Stadium.
