Lugoff Fire-Rescue has received a $14,000 grant from Duke Energy to help improve flood monitoring across the district. The funding will allow the department to purchase four Intelligent River BridgeBox sensors, which use radar technology to continuously monitor water levels along Twenty-Five Mile Creek and Buck Creek.

The project was spearheaded by Battalion Chief Chris Jones following recent flooding events that highlighted the need for better real-time water monitoring. The sensors, developed by Clemson University, will provide frequent updates on rising water levels, helping firefighters and emergency personnel make faster, data-driven decisions during flood events.

The grant was awarded through Duke Energy’s HERO program, which distributed $500,000 to emergency response organizations across South Carolina. Fire Chief Chris Spitzer thanked Duke Energy for its continued support in helping Lugoff Fire better protect the community from flood-related hazards.
