Governor Henry McMaster has named Dr. Brannon Traxler as acting director of the South Carolina Department of Public Health. Dr. Traxler currently serves as the agency’s Chief Medical Officer and deputy director of Health Promotion and Services. She brings more than 18 years of experience in medicine and public health to the role. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as Chief Medical Officer for South Carolina’s emergency response efforts. Governor McMaster praised her leadership and experience, saying she has earned the trust and respect of colleagues across the state. Dr. Traxler officially began serving as acting director Friday and will remain in the position until a permanent director is appointed and confirmed by the South Carolina Senate.
