The Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers that time is running out to request a filing extension. The deadline to apply is April 15, which gives filers until October 15 to submit their federal return. However, officials stress that an extension only applies to filing—not paying. Any taxes owed are still due by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. Taxpayers can request an extension for free online through IRS Free File, submit Form 4868, or make a payment and select “extension” as the reason. Certain groups, including military members overseas, may qualify for automatic extensions.
