New federal work requirements for SNAP benefits are now in effect in South Carolina. According to the South Carolina Department of Social Services, changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act took effect February 1st and expand who must meet work requirements to remain eligible for food assistance.
Under the new rules, able-bodied adults without dependents, ages 18 to 64, must work or participate in approved work programs for at least 80 hours a month to continue receiving SNAP benefits beyond 3 months in a three-year period. That upper age limit was previously 54.
Several exemptions have also been removed, including those for veterans, homeless individuals, and young adults who aged out of foster care. Caregivers of children ages fourteen to seventeen are now subject to the requirement as well. Locally, these changes could impact hundreds of SNAP recipients across Kershaw County, particularly adults between the ages of 55 and 64 and caregivers of older children who were previously exempt. State officials say residents who may be affected are encouraged to review eligibility rules and available work programs to avoid interruptions in benefits.
